While Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One won the domestic weekend box office with $56.2 million in ticket sales, its debut performance was a bit lower than projected. However, it is important to note it opened on Wednesday instead of Friday and also had a strong international haul of $155 million.
As reported by Comscore, its five-day earnings equaled $80 million, which may have taken a bit of steam out of its three-day weekend sales. While it’s obviously not an apples-to-apples comparison, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has now placed below the weekend openings of Mission: Impossible 2’s $57.8 million and Mission: Impossible – Fallout’s $61 million.
Globally, the seventh Mission: Impossible film’s opening days have brought in a franchise-best $235 million, which puts it on its way to recouping its roughly $300 million production budget before marketing.
Reviews and reception have been very positive for Dead Reckoning, so it should continue to do well at the box office in the coming weeks. That being said, it is facing off against the beast known as Barbenheimer next week as Oppenheimer and Barbie will both open in theaters on July 21.
In our Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One review, we said it “sees Tom Cruise’s anti-algorithm crusade take hilariously literal form, in a fun, intense and self-reflexive action saga that works despite itself.”
Sound of Freedom continues to impress in its second weekend as it took second place with $27 million, bringing its North American total to $85.49 million.
Insidious: The Red Door followed with a weekend haul of $13 million and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Elemental rounded out the top five with $12 million and $8.7 million, respectively.
