With “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” having had its world premiere in Rome this week, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie and star/producer Tom Cruise are still at work on the follow-up, which releases next Summer.
Reviews have painted ‘Part One’ as a fairly complete work that effectively stands on its own, even as it lays the groundwork for ‘Part Two’. Whilst the second part began filming in March last year, McQuarrie has revealed this week they’ve still not settled on the ending.
He tells Collider this week:
“I don’t know what the ending of Part Two is, so I couldn’t tell you. I’m not being evasive. I could tell you that I know what the end of Part Two is, but I can’t guarantee that that will be the ending when we get there.”
McQuarrie goes on to discuss how he and Cruise handle the planning and writing on the films, saying they generally have an idea set in place before they start, but they’re also capable of changing things up should a new idea they spark to comes along:
“Tom and I never obsess about executing the plan. We always have a direction, we always have a place we’re going. In our trying to describe the process, in retrospect, it sounds as though what we do is just flying by the seat of our pants and making it up as we go along. That’s not an accurate description. You are definitely flying in a direction, you’re definitely prepared. You couldn’t be that cavalier without somebody getting seriously physically hurt. These things are planned within an inch of their life. Along the way, we see a shiny object and go for it.”
Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Henry Czerny also star in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” which is due for release on July 12th, with the second part to be released on June 28th 2024.
