In a shocking turn of events, a shooting unfolded at Morgan State University, a historically Black college in Baltimore, Maryland, on the night of Oct. 3, continuing into the early hours of Oct. 4.

Campus officials reported hearing gunshots around 9:25 p.m. They discovered four males and one female who had been shot. The victims were immediately hospitalized, and their injuries were determined to be non-life threatening.

Multiple videos posted by Morgan State students captured the chaotic scene on campus, showing SWAT members entering dormitories and police officers patrolling in search of the shooter. The shooting ceased around midnight, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted early on Oct. 4. pic.twitter.com/bi12qyx037

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that no one was in custody early on Wednesday, Oct. 4, following the shooting. Campus Police Chief Lance Hatcher revealed that four of the five victims were students of the university.

The campus police are conducting an ongoing investigation to identify the number of shooters and the exact starting point of the shooting, which reportedly occurred outdoors.

As a safety precaution, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the campus, and individuals were advised to steer clear of the area surrounding Thurgood Marshall Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Center. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his frustration in a news conference, vowing to apprehend those responsible for the violence.

He stated:

“For those who decided to come onto this jewel of a campus, and inflict this pain and trauma on their community — we’re going to find you. We won’t stop.”

Multiple videos posted by Morgan State students captured the chaotic scene on campus, showing SWAT members entering dormitories and police officers patrolling in search of the shooter. The shooting ceased around midnight, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted early on Oct. 4.

University President David Wilson revealed that the incident occurred as students were leaving a coronation ceremony and heading towards a student center as part of the school’s homecoming week.

Due to the shooting, all classes at Morgan State University were canceled for Oct. 4, allowing the campus community time to recover from the traumatic incident.

The recent shooting at Morgan State University adds to a concerning trend of violence at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In August 2023, a large group of Howard University students were attacked by a mob, resulting in multiple injuries.

The attackers were reportedly non-students who specifically targeted Howard students. This incident highlights the vulnerability of HBCU campuses and the need for increased security measures.

Tragically, violence has also struck multiple HBCUs over Labor Day Weekend, resulting in the loss of four students. Morehouse College, Norfolk State, and Virginia State all experienced shootings and car accidents, leaving their respective communities in mourning. These incidents shed light on the urgent need to address the safety concerns faced by HBCUs.
