Jamie Tiller, co-founder of the influential archival label Music From Memory, died Sunday (October 15) in a “tragic accident,” the label said in a statement on Instagram and confirmed in an email to Pitchfork. Tiller was 44 years old.
Jamie Tiller started Music From Memory with Tako Reyenga and Abel Nagengast in 2013, compiling and reissuing records by the likes of Gigi Masin, Napoleon Cherry, and Suzo Sáiz, often boosting awareness of overlooked work that soon became beloved. Recently, the label has expanded to issue new albums by artists including Yu Su. Tiller was also a beloved DJ, mixing contemporary dance music with era-spanning international pop. He is survived by his wife and son.
In their statement, Music From Memory’s Boris van der Hoff, Tako Reyenga, and Nick Verbakel wrote:
Jamie was an absolute inspiration and an amazing friend. He approached music with a purity and humility that gave joy to so many. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to touch and inspire people all around the world.
He will be greatly missed.
They added that details of a celebration of Tiller’s life and legacy would follow.
