A new report at Forbes has revealed that Disney has spent approximately $141.3 million on pre-production and filming in the UK on the upcoming second season of Marvel Studios’ “Loki”.
That translates to £110.6 million, which is more than the pre-production and filming stages on UK-shot Marvel films like “Doctor Strange” (£103 million) and the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” (£91 million).
The number doesn’t include post-production and thus is not a final tally as yet. “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Hawkeye,” and the first season of “Loki” were all previously reported to have cost around a total of $25 million per episode, as did Lucasfilm’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi” – their entire season budgets sitting at around $150 million each.
Marvel’s high-profile yet poorly-received “Secret Invasion”, which recently finished airing, reportedly had a budget of $212 million, which works out to just over $35 million per episode.
“Andor” had a more expensive season overall at $250 million, but that was split over twelve episodes and thus is one of the cheapest on this list at $12.5 million per episode. Other recently costly shows include HBO’s “The Last of Us” at a reported $15 million per episode and Netflix’s upcoming “One Piece” at a reported $18 million per episode.
Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” remains the most expensive show ever made at $465 million for its eight-episode first season – which calculates out at around $58 million per episode. Second is Amazon’s heavily reshot “Citadel” at $300 million for its season and $50 million per episode.
The new season of “Loki” sees Tom Hiddleston’s Loki becoming unstuck in time, forcing him and the TVA to once again join forces. Owen Wilson, Jonathan Majors and more return for the new season, which premieres in October on the Disney+ service.
