So is Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie a Deux” a musical or is it not?
The general belief has been that the film will unfold almost entirely within Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum and will have musical elements. In addition, the film will take visual inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s lavish musical “One from the Heart”.
Then last month, director of photography Lawrence Sher seemed to downplay the musical elements, revealing: “Its got some music. It’s not a musical per se, but it’s like… it just has music in it, that’s all.”
Now, Variety has broken down more details on the film’s music. The trade says according to those who’ve worked on the film the movie is “mostly a jukebox musical” with at least fifteen reinterpretations of ‘very well-known’ songs.
One of those songs is “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon”. Whether the project will include any original songs is not known at this time, nor are any of the other numbers.
However one thing all will have in common is Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir will add her “distinctive, haunting [music] cues” to each number.
Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson star whilst Phillips collaborated on the screenplay with Scott Silver. The budget for the sequel has reportedly neared $200 million more than triple the original film.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4th.
