New MRT Pink Line on track for Nov. 21 trial run, Dec. 18 launch

All systems go: Bangkok’s newest monorail line has a date for its long-awaited trial run.

Preparations are underway and safety inspections are being carried out at the MRT Pink Line this week before it’s ready to take passengers on its trial run this coming Tuesday (Nov. 21), according to the transport ministry.

Passengers can ride the new monorail for free during this trial before it officially launches. The new monorail line, which runs from Khae Rai to Min Buri, is expected to be fully operable starting Dec. 18 with passenger fares ranging from THB15 – THB45.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will also be on site during the trial run.

The transport ministry states that overall progress of the project is currently at 99 percent completion, with ongoing construction work on access ramps at three stations: Chatuchak 14, Government Center for Reform and National Telecommunications, and National Telecommunications Station.

Some station exits may not be ready for service during this trial period, but the ministry has reassured the public  that they will be accessible upon launch with safety guaranteed.

Construction on the MRT Pink Line began in December 2017 alongside the not-quite-complete Orange Line. The two lines, as well as the newly opened Yellow Line that began work in 2018 and launched earlier this year, have been a source of consternation from the public as work on the skytrain lines has created massive traffic jams throughout Bangkok.
