For a while now it has been known that “House of the Dragon” actress Millie Alcock will play the title role in the upcoming “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” film at James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures.
The project is expected to be the second of the DCU films to be released, arriving in June 2026 – just under a year after kick-off film “Superman” hits on July 11th 2025.
While “Superman” will wrap its shoot in August at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, the soundstages will seemingly immediately jump into readiness to shoot “Supergirl” which reportedly kicks off in October according to a Production Weekly listing.
That means with filming around four months away, casting is underway for the supporting characters in the film. Daniel RPK reports that the project is currently searching for actors to play three key roles: the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, teenage ally character Ruthye Marye Knoll, and a voice actor for the role of Krypto.
Gunn himself subsequently shot down part of the report, revealing on Threads: “there is no casting for the voice of Krypto”. He also debunked a more random rumor that the film was set in 2021.
Craig Gillespie is set to direct the film in which Kara Zor-El is said to be a “less earnest and more edgy version” compared to previous incarnations played by the likes of Helen Slater, Laura Vandervoort, Melissa Benoist and Sasha Calle.
Specifically it’s being based on Tom King’s 2021 “Woman of Tomorrow” comic and sees Supergirl traveling across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she meets a young woman named Ruthye and winds up on a murderous quest for revenge.
The hiring talk comes as French actress Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis in Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, revealed at San Antonio’s Superhero Comic Con recently (via Agents of Fandom) that she and Gunn have “been talking about one specific character” she could play in the new DC Universe. She couldn’t reveal which one or which project it might be.
“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” opens in cinemas on June 26th 2026.
