Filmmaker Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas are still out there talking “Oppenheimer” ahead of the film’s release on disc next week.
However in a new interview with Yahoo, it sounds like the pair are ready to move on from discussion of the film and its subject matter. The outlet asked them how do they decompress from an experience like this and the weighty subject matter. Nolan responded:
“I definitely – part of me wants to leave the story behind. I mean, you know, it’s a great privilege to be able to talk about a film that you’ve made that’s now going into the home and on 4k and Blu-ray and all the rest.
It’s great to be able to sit here and talk to you about the success of the movie. That’s a huge privilege. But the subject matter is very dark. It’s nihilistic. And, yeah, there’s part of me that’s quite keen to move on and maybe do something, you know, not quite as bleak.”
Nolan also spoke about filmmaker and critic Spike Lee’s comments on the film that appreciated what Nolan did, though added he would have liked to have shown the Japanese perspective and the destruction caused by the bomb.
Asked how he reacted to Lee’s comments on the film, Nolan was entirely gracious:
“Spike Lee’s one of my idols. And for him to say that he thought Oppenheimer was a great film, that was the bit I focused on. I was really…. No, no, no. I was– I was just blown away by it. And he was very specific and respectful in what he was saying, that he would have done a particular thing because he’s a different filmmaker. And different filmmakers interpret things differently. So I honestly was just thrilled that he got something out of the movie.”
Emma Thomas added that Nolan was “very clear from the beginning” that he wanted to tell this story from the point of view of J Robert Oppenheimer himself who receives the information about what’s done with his bomb over the radio like the rest of America.
“Oppenheimer” is set to hit disc on November 21st.
