In the history of Marvel Studios, one of the films that sits consistently at or near the bottom is 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk”.
Along with being the lowest-grossing Marvel Studios film to date, reviews are mixed and the film is generally seen as one of the MCU’s early stumbles before it was able to start sprinting.
The film also marked the first and only appearance of Edward Norton in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the role being recast with Mark Ruffalo taking over for every subsequent MArvel films.
Norton’s performance scored mixed reviews and, in Joanna Robinson’s newly released book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios” (via SHH), it’s revealed one aspect of that performance the actor had little time for.
Terry Notary is a famed stunt co-ordinator and movement coach who discussed his time filming the project and indicated Norton didn’t engage much for the motion capture work as Hulk in the film:
“[Norton] wasn’t really engaged, as far as the Hulk stuff goes, unless he was transforming from himself into the Hulk. He was not very present through the whole thing.”
That left much of it up to the VFX department who had to do movements and facial expressions manually. Keith Roberts, who served as animation director on the film, said:
“Hulk doesn’t have Edward Norton’s expressions, but the two are eerily similar in facial timing.”
Notary however has high praise for co-star Tim Roth who played the villain The Abomination:
“[Roth is] one of those quintessential actors that likes to be involved, wants to make sure that he’s going to look good and his character’s going to look good.”
This is hardly the first story of Norton’s set difficulties during production as he reportedly had creative clashes with the studio and ultimately avoided promoting the movie upon release.
