Offset revealed that Tyler, The Creator inspired his Micahel Jackson era. During an interview with GQ, the former Migos rapper talked about his solo career. He credited a conversation with the California native as a catalyst for his current phase.
Donned sequined coats and accessories, Offset has bolstered his style for his new solo album. He detailed the look as, “bold, a little selfish, a little arrogant, very confident, talking sh*t, and fearless to creativity.” He then recalled his conversation with Tyler.
“It was a year ago, at the Roc Nation Brunch, and I was telling [Tyler] my vision of being a standout artist and a solo artist and reinventing myself. I was glorifying him, telling him, ‘I respect how you stay in character [for each album],’” Offset remembered. “He was like, ‘You should do it, too. Ni**as ain’t going to f**k with it at first, but ni**as never f**k with the good sh*t first. They always sleep on it, and then you show them throughout the process.’ I really took that sh*t to head.”
He also credited Michael’s letter to himself in the 1970s as an inspiration. Set explained that while he didn’t pen a note to himself, Jackson’s letter helped him pin down his ambitions.
“I didn’t do nothing similar, but mentally I’m trying to take it all the way there and just show people that I’m an all-around star instead of just a rap star. That’s why I’m shooting my own videos. I’m doing my own merch designs, dancing in videos, dancing onstage with choreo and with dancers because I just want to do something that separates me from everybody.”
Offset recently dropped off his sophomore solo album, Set It Off, on Oct. 13. Set It Off features guest verses from Cardi B, Travis Scott, Future, Latto, Don Toliver, Chlöe, Yung Nudy, and Mango Foo.
