“One Piece” Director Talks Finding Luffy

There’s a lot of praise going around right now regarding Netflix’s “One Piece” with a good chunk of it regarding the show’s casting – especially regarding its five lead roles.

Key to the whole thing working is the show’s lead character Monkey D. Luffy played by Inaki Godoy who was just 18 years old when he shot the series back in January-August last year.

As can be seen in interviews and featurettes, the actor isn’t that different from his character – full of life and energy, very optimistic and yet fun and warm.

Marc Jobst, director of the show’s pilot episode, tells Screen Rant that those traits were key to Godoy scoring the job and casting that character was the most challenging of anyone on the production:

“Luffy is the hardest character to cast because he carries the whole show. And he is the drive of positivity. He believes. He believes in having dreams. He believes in believing in yourself. He inspires people to be themselves, to be more of themselves. He wants to help them become more of themselves.

When Inaki came in, we knew, we just knew. Partly because he made us all laugh in his audition. He did something crazy and off-script, very deliberately. And it was like, okay, he’s got some cheek and some charm and some chutzpah to him. That’s kind of Luffy, you know.

The reason why I say he’s the hardest to cast is because that positivity can get quite irritating in film, and he never did, I don’t feel. He just emanated warmth and goodwill.”

Godoy so far has received essentially unanimous praise for his work on the series, including from original manga creator Eiichiro Oda himself, with the rest of the cast not far behind.

In addition, Netflix has released a new featurette about the making of the series today – including how the $18 million an episode series actually built numerous ships for real.

All eight episodes of “One Piece” can be streamed exclusively on Netflix, with the show currently topping the charts. No word as yet regarding a second-season renewal.
