As previously reported, Netflix’s live-action “One Piece” series spared no expense at trying to capture the look and feel of Eiichiro Oda’s iconic manga and anime.
It succeeded, scoring superb reviews, strong numbers so far and an immediate renewal. To achieve its success, however, required perfectionism to such an extent that one of the key early sequences in the first episode had to be redone.
Cinematographer Nicole Hirsch Whitaker revealed to The Direct this week that the production ended up reshooting the action scene set onboard Alvida’s ship involving Luffy fighting with the female pirate captain and first revealing his stretchy powers.
Turns out that sequence was the “very first thing” the production filmed and it involved over a week of shooting. One big difference was that the original filming took place during the day. The reshoots on the other hand saw that sequence being shifted to night:
“I’ll be honest, we originally shot out the entire Alvida scene during the day. Then I was not able to go back to shoot the reshoot, which was shot at night. And I do miss some of the things that we did during the daytime scenes.
I mean, it works great, and they did it for story reasons, which I understood. They felt like it needed to be at night. Originally, it was night in the script. And then for production reasons, it became day. And then they made it night again. So that was the only thing that I was kind of sad about.”
Whitaker adds she was a “little bit sad” the original work she did wasn’t used, but then says: “If it’s good for the story, it’s it’s okay”.
The first season of “One Piece” is now on Netflix.
