Yesterday in Hollywood, the 2023 Variety Hitmakers Brunch brought out some of the biggest musicians of the moment, including names such as Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and SZA. Having just starred on the cover of Variety’s Power of Women issue, Eilish was a particularly buzzy attendee: The star has been going viral for her accompanying cover interview, in which it appears she came out to fans. “I didn’t realize people didn’t know,” Eilish said on the red carpet last night. “I just don’t really believe in [coming out]. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist’? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it.”
Equally as viral, meanwhile, was Eilish’s choice of ensemble last night. The singer stepped out in an outfit that only she could pull off. The styling choice of it all can only be described as very Gen Z—a deliberate mishmash of items that’s a little bit ironic, a little bit cool, and a whole lot of look. Let’s start with her vintage L.A. Dodgers varsity jacket, which is—perhaps—a subtle nod to Elton John’s iconic Dodgers costume, as are the big theatrical shades to go with it. She then paired it with a vintage Barbie tee (she did soundtrack the film, after all), pink Awake NY beanie hat, extremely baggy jeans, and Osiris sneakers.
All together, the fashion moment perfectly encapsulates Gen Z’s obsession with vintage and Y2K style. And on anyone else, it could have read a little too much. But on Eilish? The wonderfully weird mix works. Plus, her red carpet history proves that there’s little she can’t pull off—be it a Marilyn Monroe gown, or a Barbiefied shirt and tie.
