Weekly Commentary (Updated Nov. 6, 2023): Few artisans command as much love and adoration as the legendary costume designer Ann Roth. At 92-years-old, if nominated, she would be the oldest person ever recognized for a competitive award.

With a career spanning over six decades, the two time Oscar winner of “The English Patient” (1997) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2020) has not only dressed characters but also woven the fabric of cinematic narratives with her exquisite designs, and she does it once again in Kelly Fremon Craig’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” Paired with her brief but effective scene in “Barbie,” when the titular character meets an elderly woman on a bench, its another example of the legend being impactful in every facet of our cinematic culture.

What sets Roth’s work in “Margaret” apart from her competitors, is her ability to delve deep and understand the psyche of characters. She doesn’t merely create costumes, she crafts visual identities that mirror the souls of the individuals she dresses as seen in the choices for Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates.
