One of the 2024 films we have yet to see anything from is “Twisters,” the movie which was initially suggested to be a direct sequel to 1996’s “Twister”.
Since then that connection has been walked back as this is said to be its own thing and won’t continue the story – even as the joint production between Universal and Warner Bros. Pictures was initially dubbed a “new chapter from the 1996 movie”.
The other week, “The Revenant” writer Mark L. Smith indicated that the film’s director, Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”), re-wrote some of his script. While he doesn’t know the final details, as far as he’s aware, the film is not a continuation of the original.
Now one of the film’s stars, Glen Powell, has doubly confirmed that. Speaking with Vogue magazine whilst promoting currently in cinemas rom-com “Anyone But You,” Powell says the whole thing is completely standalone:
“It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”
When first announced, the project was rumored to have the daughter of Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton’s characters as the lead – a young woman who has caught the storm chasing bug her parents had. That’s not the case it seems.
Powell co-stars in the film alongside future Superman David Corenswet, “Normal People” breakout Daisy Edgar-Jones, “Nope” scene stealer Brandon Perea, “Sabrina” star Kiernan Shipka as well as Sasha Lane, Anthony Ramos, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney.
Powell also confirms he’s reuniting with his “Scream Queens” producer Ryan Murphy for an upcoming Broadway musical, adding that more people ask him about his Chad Radwell role in that series than anything else he’s done (including “Top Gun: Maverick”).
“Twisters” will release next year.
