Primary Wave Music announces a partnership with Neil Finn, founding member of the band Crowded House, in a deal that sees Primary Wave acquire Finn’s music publishing catalog, plus a piece of Crowded House’s IP.

The new multi-million-dollar deal will see the leading independent publisher acquiring Finn’s music publishing catalog and writer’s share of public performance for his work with Crowded House, in addition to his solo material.

Covered in the deal are some of Neil Finn’s biggest hits across his career, including songs he wrote and composed as a founding member of Crowded House, his solo material, and songs he wrote as part of New Zealand pop/new wave band Split Enz. Songs include “Better Be Home Soon,” “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” and “Weather With You.”

“I look forward to seeing Primary Wave’s plan for the ongoing care of my songs. I am confident they see the body of my work as music that matters. This deal has been a good while in the making and feels right,” says Finn.

“We are thrilled to welcome Neil Finn to Primary Wave,” adds Primary Wave’s David Weitzman. “Not only is he a master songwriter, he is the songwriters’ favorite songwriter. We look forward to working closely with Neil and his great team at Shelter Management on the next stages of his storied career.”

Finn and his Crowded House bandmates will release Gravity Stairs in May, their first new release since 2021’s Dreamers Are Waiting, and their eighth album overall. Produced by the band with Steven Schram, the album features Crowded House in its current incarnation with Finn, his sons Elroy and Liam, Nick Seymour, and Mitchell Froom.

His brother Tim, with whom Neil played in Split Enz, makes an appearance on the album, on “Some Greater Plan (for Claire),” a track drawing inspiration from their father’s war diary about a whirlwind romance in Italy. “It was always a thing that came up; Dad would have this wistful look in his eye when he would talk about Italy,” recalls Finn.

Neil Finn’s body of work has earned him devoted fans the world over, an Order of the British Empire honor, and induction into the Australian Recording Industry Association’s Hall of Fame.
