Universal Music Group has announced a special edition vinyl in celebration of Public Enemy’s 35th-anniversary milestone and their influential sophomore album, It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back.
The special edition vinyl will be available in two versions: a 4-LP 180-gram vinyl and a 2LP 180-gram vinyl.
The 4LP package includes bonus tracks from the Deluxe 2CD edition, extensive liner notes written by Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Q-Tip, and Questlove, as well as a 12×12 sticker insert featuring the renowned Public Enemy logo. The vinyl is set to be released on November 10, 2023.
Chuck D, one of the group’s founding members, reflected on the album’s groundbreaking impact, stating:
“Thanks to Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Whodini, we knew that hip-hop albums could explode on cassettes. At about the same time, Hank Shocklee, the manager of a record store, pointed out how rock bands were maximizing the album concept. So, we took that and went further with ‘It Takes a Nation,’ approaching it like a rock band. It ended up becoming a part of rap’s evolution from a singles-driven genre into the dawn of rap’s album age.”
The album has gained critical acclaim over the years, earning its place in music history. Rolling Stone ranked it at number 15 in the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” emphasizing its cultural significance.
Pitchfork also awarded the album with a perfect score of “10.0,” highlighting its transformative impact on rap music, they stated: “It changed the face of rap music.”
In other news, the hip-hop collective recently headlined the National Celebration of Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary alongside Ice-T. The concert took place on October 6th and 7th at West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., further solidifying their influence and contribution to the genre’s legacy.
Coinciding with Public Enemy’s 35th anniversary celebration, Janet Jackson recently marked the 34th anniversary of her groundbreaking album, Rhythm Nation 1814. Released on September 19, 1989, the album tackled significant social issues, showcasing Jackson’s artistic growth and cultural impact.
