Music legend Tony Bennett, whose career spanned eight decades and was still releasing No. 1 albums well into his eighties, has died. He was 96.
Bennett passed away on Friday morning in New York City. He began work as a recording artist in 1949 and was one of the top pop performers in the 1950s and early 1960s, best known for his still most iconic song: “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. Other songs included “Because of You,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “The Good Life” and “Rags to Riches” which was used in the opening of Scorsese’s “Goodfellas”.
Decades later when he was well into his sixties, he underwent a career resurgence in the early 1990s, which continued for over two decades as the MTV generation and millennials discovered his work, and he became a regular fixture on late-night TV.
He became well known for his numerous duets and collaborations on both individual songs and/or full albums with the likes of k.d. lang, Lady Gaga, Diana Krall and Amy Winehouse, among many others.
Though diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016, he kept performing and recording through 2021 – releasing his final album at the age of 95 years and two months – breaking the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material.
Over his career, he amassed 20 Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards, along with selling more than 50 million records worldwide.
