Lionsgate’s “John Wick” franchise is about to expand with the upcoming “The Continental” prequel series set in the 1970s along with the Ana de Armas-led spin-off film “Ballerina” next year.
This all comes as the main films have seemingly come to a close with “John Wick: Chapter 4” which seemingly kills off Wick, whilst also leaving the door slightly ajar for his potential return.
In the months since the film’s release, those involved have been asked about a potential fifth film, and all seem happy to take a break for now. They add that say if they come up with a compelling story, they’ll probably do it.
In a new interview with Collider, producer Basil Iwanyk revealed that the film’s star Keanu Reeves was so tired at the end of filming the fourth film he wanted to make sure Wick was definitively killed off. Iwanyk complied… mostly:
“After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally. By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it. He was like, ‘I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie.’ We were like, ‘You know, we’ll leave a 10% little opening.’”
In fact Iwanyk, out promoting “The Continental,” said Reeves and director Chad Stahelski are already considering Chapter 5:
“The way I describe it is that they’re like Paul McCartney and John Lennon, and I’m Ringo. They’ll call me and let me know, ‘All right, we’re showing up. Here’s where you show up, and here’s what our story is.’ We all want another John Wick. We don’t know what it looks like and when it will happen, but we love each other and we love this world.”
“John Wick: Chapter 4” is streaming on Starz and is available on VOD services. “The Continental” meanwhile will premiere on Peacock on September 22nd.
