Veteran film producer Charles Roven and his Atlas Entertainment label have been involved in countless films over the years, including much of filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s work, such as his latest “Oppenheimer”.
Recently Roven spoke with THR about the film and the state of the industry at the moment, during which he offered updates on the various projects he’s involved in.
First up, he confirms the Gal Gadot-led “Cleopatra” film is still in the works, and Kari Skogland remains attached as director. The project was moved from Paramount to Universal, but can’t really “move the script forward” because of the writer’s strike.
Next he says there’s plans to do another “Uncharted” movie following the impressive box-office for the Tom Holland-led first film based on the acclaimed video game series:
“We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.”
Right before the strikes, Roven was involved in filmmaker John Woo’s Paris-set remake of his own iconic 1989 Hong Kong action film “The Killer”. That was shut down by the actor’s strike with “somewhere between 10 and 18 days left” to film. Asked what Woo’s motivation was to revisit the film, he says:
“Well, he was motivated by the Jean-Pierre Melville new wave gangster movies that Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon starred in, and those were obviously shot in Paris.
So he just became motivated about doing an homage to The Killer in Paris because he was inspired by those movies. He also came up with an idea to make it fresh.
In the original Killer, the great Chinese male actor Chow Yun-Fat played the killer, but the killer in this movie is played by Nathalie Emmanuel. And by changing the dynamic to a woman, the storyline became quite different.
So, while it’s a homage to his movie, it’s definitely not a remake. There’s a lot of original content in it that’s different from the first movie.
Roven is also slated to work with filmmaker David O. Russell for a third time with the film “Super Toys”.
