Rumor: Johnny Gaudreau’s future may not be in Columbus

In his final season in Calgary, Johnny Gaudreau enjoyed the season of his career. He collected 115 points, 16 more than his second-best season in terms of points.

Because of this memorable 2021-2022 campaign, he earned a huge seven-year, $68.25 million pact ($9.75 million per year).

In his first season with the Blue Jackets, he collected 74 points in 80 games, which isn’t bad. It’s not bad, but it’s a far cry from the 115 points he collected the year before. And this year, his production has plummeted again. With 22 points in 35 games, he’s on track for just 63 points.

It’s logical to wonder whether his future lies in Ohio. In any case, the team’s GM, Jarmo Kekalainen, is reportedly open to the idea of discussing all his players. In the text below by Jonathan Bailey, it says that guys like Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson, David Jiricek and Zach Werenski are untouchable for obvious reasons.

But in Bruce Garrioch’s original text, these names aren’t mentioned.

So, who’s untouchable in Columbus and who isn’t?

In either world, I see no reason why Johnny Hockey shouldn’t be. After all, at 30, he’s no longer the youngest, and his contract is a hefty one.

The American has a $9.75 million payroll through 2028-2029… What’s more, Gaudreau has a no-movement clause for the next two seasons and a no-movement and no-trade clause for the next three.

The clauses, combined with his production, combined with his salary: it will be very difficult to trade him. So I don’t believe the rumours that he’s headed elsewhere. If Kekalainen managed to trade him, I’d take my hat off to him.

All indications are that he’s in Columbus to stay, though.

– No doubt about it.

“He is special. His poise, his brains, his hands, his edgework. He’s always aware of where opportunities are. Everybody on the ice knows he’s a brilliant player & yet he continues to do brilliant things. He could be the best D-man this WJC.” – Craig Button on Lane Hutson today. pic.twitter.com/0672gk0md4
