Joe and Anthony Russo are in early talks to return to the Marvel Studios fold, the pair reportedly being lined up to direct the next two “Avengers” movies according to THR.
Sources for the trade say the talks are in the early stages. but their return is on several fronts and could well go beyond these two films. Once hired, it will end a months-long search by the studio for filmmakers to oversee the fifth and sixth “Avengers” with several names, including Shawn Levy (“Deadpool & Wolverine”) in contention.
The move is seen as a homecoming for The Russos who directed the second and third “Captain America” films and the third and fourth “Avengers” films – the latter becoming the No. 2 movie of all time globally with $2.79 billion in box-office.
Since then, they have become more famous for producing successes like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and the “Extraction” films and costly disappointments like Amazon’s “Citadel” series.
On the flip side, their directorial efforts haven’t been so well received – Tom Holland’s crime drama “Cherry” failing to draw much critical love or attention, whilst the $200 million “The Gray Man” was seen but not well-regarded.
Their most recent film is the upcoming sci-fi adventure “The Electric State” at Netflix, a tentpole film that has been rumored to cost around $300 million to produce.
The fifth “Avengers” is set for May 2026 and the sixth for May 2027.
