Ryan Murphy will exit Netflix at the end of his five-year, nine-figure overall deal and is already lining up a new home at Disney.
Murphy left 20th Century Television in 2018 for a $300 million deal at Netflix, becoming one of the biggest producers to sign with the streamer alongside “Grey’s Anatomy” alum Shonda Rhimes in a period where numerous TV megaproducers made massive deals with streamers.
Murphy produced multiple series for Netflix, including the Ewan McGregor-led “Halston,” the “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” prequel series “Ratched,” the dark comedy “The Politician” and the ensemble revisionist history tale “Hollywood” along with the films “The Prom” and “The Boys in the Band” – none of which really took off.
Then, towards the deal’s end, he had surprise massive hits with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” becoming a runaway sensation and one of Netflix’s biggest performers to date. His mystery thriller “The Watcher” also became a big hit.
Murphy will reunite with Dana Walden, now co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, who worked with Murphy when she headed 20th Century Fox TV.
During his tenure, Murphy continued to produce shows for 20th which predated his departure including the “American Horror Story” and “911” franchises and “Pose”.
