SAG-AFTRA Extend Talks Until July 12th

Looks like there won’t be a strike tomorrow as SAG-AFTRA and the studios have agreed to keep talking beyond the midnight Friday contract deadline.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and SAG-AFTRA issued a joint statement just before 7pm Friday confirming the union has agreed to extend the current contract’s end date to July 12th.

In a message to its membership, SAG-AFTRA said the leadership had decided unanimously to extend the contract “in order to exhaust every opportunity to achieve the righteous contract we all demand and deserve… No one should mistake this extension for weakness. We see you. We hear you. We are you.”

The two sides are expected to meet again on Saturday. Negotiations have been underway since June 7th, with the two sides having lengthy meetings in the last few days.

Even so, they remain far apart on some key issues, and the union could still call a strike if the talks break down. Should a strike occur, it would halt almost all scripted film and TV production that has not already been shut down by the writers – including many overseas productions.

SAG-AFTRA is said to be seeking gains in AI protections, streaming residuals, along with strengthening their pension and health plans.
