Earlier this year, following the premiere of his new film “Killers of the Flower Moon” at Cannes, filmmaker Martin Scorsese had a meeting with none other than Pope Francis himself.
He also participated in a conference titled ‘The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination’ at the Vatican where the director announced a new film project saying he responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists by doing what he does best.
What would that be? He said to Variety at the time: “Imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus, and I’m about to start making it.”
Cut to several months later and the 80-year-old filmmaker is still figuring out what he’d like to do next – with the Jesus film still a serious contender. Speaking to Time Magazine, he says one possibility is an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s novel “Home”.
Another is his film about Jesus Christ, and discussing that he says he’s still forming his idea for the film but one thing he has set – he’ll play a role in it:
“I don’t know what it’s going to be, exactly. I don’t know what you’d call it. It wouldn’t be a straight narrative, but there would be staged scenes. And I’d be in it.”
Scorsese previously made a movie about Jesus back in 1988 with “The Last Temptation of Christ” and has tackled religious subject matter on film before, such as with 2016’s “Silence”.
