Despite all the stories of their falling-out, Selena Gomez still wished one-time bestie and kidney donor Francia Raisa the “happiest of birthdays” on her Instagram on July 26. So what is this? A savvy PR move? An olive branch? Subtle shade? Nothing at all?
“Happiest of birthdays to this special human being,” Gomez wrote in the caption, tagging Raisa. “No matter where life takes us, I love you.” The post includes a carousel of three pics showing Gomez and Raisa posing together and smiling.
As you may be aware, Raisa donated a kidney to Gomez, who has been diagnosed with lupus, back in 2017. You’d think that sharing literal organs would bond two people together for life, but rumors of a rift between them began in 2022, after Gomez said in a Rolling Stone interview, “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong.” Raisa, who is a fellow actor, commented (then deleted), “Interesting,” on an E! News Instagram post sharing the quote and unfollowed Gomez on IG.
On TikTok, Gomez responded to a video discussing the Great Unfollowing with a comment of her own: “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.” Following that, in May of 2023, Raisa was seen dodging TMZ’s questions about her friendship with Gomez as if her life depended on it.
So why is Selena Gomez now posting happy birthday messages to Raisa on Instagram? Honestly, your guess is as good as mine.
