Queensland musician and athlete Cody Simpson has shared a heartwarming reaction on Instagram to his partner Emma McKeon being honoured as the Young Australian of the Year for 2024.
McKeon, 29, was announced as the recipient at a ceremony led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, with Simpson cheering her on virtually.
Simpson, 27, couldn’t contain his excitement, audibly whooping as McKeon’s name was read.
In the clip, Simpson can he heard to say“Oh, she looks good,” as McKeon approached the podium.
Accompanying this candid footage was the caption: “The most special human @emmamckeon. Congratulations my love. So proud of you.”
McKeon is Australia’s most decorated Olympian, winning 11 medals, including multiple golds from the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.
McKeon and Simpson have been dating since 2022 and have bought a home together on the Gold Coast.
“Emma is a huge part of my life, and has been such a positive influence on me in terms of keeping me grounded since we met,” Simpson previously told the Courier-Mail.
“She is a really calming presence, she has really helped me, and she just impresses me so much, she is such a wonderful person.”
While McKeon has faced challenges, including a recent injury, Simpson has been gearing up for this year’s Summer Olympics with hopes to win a place on the Dolphins’ Paris team at the trials in June.
He plans to transition back into the music industry after the Paris Olympics.
“Swimming is something you can only do for a certain amount of time, some guys do swim into their mid 30s but most retire around 30, so there’s that,” he said.
“And all this time I have kept writing – not a crazy amount, but I am collecting songs and bits and pieces that I am excited to put together when swimming ends, whether that is next year or the one after.”
