Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung romancing on-screen ought to be more of a visual feast for viewers, and with their next, the fantasy romance K-drama My Demon, the buzz and hype are mounting.
Song and Kim are decorated Korean actors with rave reviews and awards to their credit for their inventiveness and versatility in harnessing their artistic acumen and lucidity in a stellar body of work. In the bargain, their renown has skyrocketed internationally, with K-dramas becoming more mainstream. The two together sharing the spotlight in My Demon is what I’m expecting: a deadly medley of chemistry, visual allure, and romance in a narrative where their union seems predestined.
In the drama, Do Do-hee (Kim), the vile heiress of a conglomerate, and Jung Gu-won (Song), a mighty demon who abruptly loses his powers, tell the tale of their contract marriage and what ensues thereupon—ephemeral good times that inevitably turn into damnation.
Do-hee has trust issues, is pompous and haughty, and is a complete cynic when it comes to love. In a recent script reading session for the show, the actress disclosed that Do-hee is assertive—her demeanor is salty as well as sweet, like a “salt latte.” She is more enthusiastic and self-assured than others. Her rough exterior makes her seem a little harsh, but that isn’t who she is for real—she is quite the opposite within.
Gu-won, on the other side, is the titular demon who can prolong his life to eternity by negotiating lethal agreements with mankind. There are sinister tales interwoven within. He disdains humanity and has been scavenging this planet for two centuries like a supreme hunter. Song elaborates on Gu-won, describing him as a “talented demon” with a “character without flaws” given his immaculate looks, style, cognitive ability, speech, and vocabulary.
The demon gets entangled with the heiress, and something thereafter leads him to lose his powers. Apparently under duress and to mend matters, he signs a contract marriage with her. The catch is that he must defend the woman, the cause of his lost powers if he wants to survive and avoid extinction. In the course of their contractual marriage, a resentful bond blossoms into love.
My Demon, with its artful storytelling, surrealism, and interesting love-hate dynamic, might be yet another great addition to the library of romance and fantasy K-dramas. The love between Do-hee and Gu-won relies on conflict. They are both overpowering, which breeds both repulsion and attraction. They may destroy anything that stands in their way of prevailing, but in an event that brings them together, interestingly, animosity triggers intimacy.
