In the lead-up to the game’s release this past Friday, online conversation surrounding PlayStation’s newest title “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” focused on not just the strong reviews but also on the game’s runtime.
The average completion time of the main story of the game across several players seems to be around 20 hours. Some went a little shorter whilst most went longer, and those aiming for 100% completion added more hours on top of that.
That is on par with the original 2018 game’s release on PS4, and in line with many major single-player titles. That said, 2023 has been an unusual year in which a number of major titles have had extra roomy runtimes from the “Zelda” sequel to “Baldur’s Gate III” and “Starfield”.
Thus, a debate regarding game value has ensued. Speaking to BBC, Insomniac Games director Bryan Intihar acknowledged the costs involved for people with gaming, and says they focused on making a game that players perceived as worth the price as opposed to padding things out with unnecessary fluff:
“For us, it really comes down to the experience we want to deliver with the quality we want to hit. Obviously, there’s a certain level of, ‘hey, someone’s going to spend this much money on a game’, so we want to give them the experience that’s worth it. Our job is to make sure that you feel no matter how long it is, it’s worth that money, it’s worth that investment.”
In spite of some complaints, it’s not expected to impact sales of the sequel – nor the reviews which are scoring higher than its predecessor. The 2018 game became PlayStation’s best-selling exclusive in history, and the much shorter “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” was still a big seller for the company.
PlayStation has yet to disclose any sales figures for the new game.
