A few months on from its release, “John Wick” franchise director Chad Stahelski admits he’s not sure about a potential fifth entry in the series.
At last report back in May, Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake revealed to investors during an earnings call that “John Wick: Chapter 5” is “in early development” and added that “when that five movie comes, [it] will be organic” to the franchise building they’re doing.
This year’s “John Wick: Chapter 4” seemingly brought the main storyline of the franchise to a close, even as spin-offs like “The Continental” and “Ballerina” will continue telling stories set within this world in the near future.
Speaking with Empire recently, Stahelski says that he’s unsure about where to take the story of a fifth film and is torn between letting the recent one be a definitive ending:
“Now we’ve done the four and completed the circle, so to speak, I think it’s pretty good closure for the series. And then there’s the competitor, or the real director in me who goes, ‘F— it, let’s just see if we can do it.’ It’s very appealing. I just don’t have the ‘why’ yet. But that doesn’t mean we should stop looking.”
Stahelski is of course looking at other projects at the moment, with his film adaptation of the PlayStation game “Ghost of Tsushima” his likely next project.
“The Continental” miniseries arrives on Peacock in September and Ballerina arrives in cinemas on June 7th 2024.
