This past week, Paramount+ made the surprise announcement that it planned to not just cancel but altogether remove four shows from its service in the coming days as a tax write-off.
The most high profile was “Star Trek: Prodigy,” the kid-friendly animated series based on the famed IP. The series, which has also turned into something of a continuation of “Star Trek: Voyager,” follows a motley crew of young aliens who find an abandoned Starfleet ship and who learn to work together as they make their way from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant.
To date, the show has aired one season split into two parts of ten episodes each. In addition, the second season of a further twenty episodes was nearly completed when the announcement was made. At the time, it was made clear CBS Studios would finish its remaining post-production on those episodes.
As Paramount+ has sold itself as the home of every “Star Trek” series and all 900+ hours of Trek-related episodes, the decision has been widely panned by the fanbase and beyond.
The hope is if Paramount doesn’t reverse its decision, the series will find a new home elsewhere. Now the show’s executive producer Aaron J. Waltke has put together a Twitter thread of ways that you can help support the series. Waltke says:
“Given our unique circumstances – 20 complete episodes in a known IP and another 20 nearly complete/exclusive for debut – prospects are good. Keep it positive, and keep it up. Now is the time to do it. Let them see an eager and active fanbase who will follow the show wherever it goes.”
The suggestions include purchasing the show’s first ten episodes are available on Blu-ray and in digital stores such as Apple iTunes and Prime Video, watching the twenty episodes currently on Paramount+ before they’re pulled in the next few days, and talking about the show on social media with hashtags like #SaveStarTrekProdigy.
As of now, “Star Trek: Prodigy” is still available to stream but how much longer is not clear.
