One of the more acclaimed indie filmmakers working today is Sean Baker. After several films such as “Prince of Broadway” and “Starlet,” he really broke through with 2015’s critically acclaimed “Tangerine” and 2017’s “The Florida Project”.
Both films landed in many best-of-the-year lists of their respective years, and 2021’s Simon Rex-led “Red Rocket” similarly scored rave reviews. He’s become a celebrated director famous for making films about outcasts and people living on the fringes of society, telling inclusionary and very humane stories without heavy handedness.
At the moment, he’s working on his next film, “Anora”, and during an update on that with Kinotico (via World of Reel), he spoke about the current state of American filmmaking and how changes to it in recent years is impacting upcoming filmmakers:
“American cinema has become more reactionary. Anything that can be described as minimally controversial now needs to be commented on. People talk about it. Videos get made on TikTok.
It bothers me because the discussion turns to anger and defense. Or turns into an attack, not an argument… There is young talent that is unable to express itself freely for fear of backlash.”
He also indicates studios are looking carefully at what people say about a film and consider the controversy that might erupt should they release a ‘problematic’ feature.
He went on to discuss his next film, which he says has already wrapped production and is by far his biggest movie to date, costing a little more than “The Florida Project”. He adds theme-wise, the tone is “closer to comedy” and “follows the line of my previous films”. No release date for that is yet set.
