The Biggest New and Upcoming Movies in 2023

Between theatrical releases and streaming exclusives, 2023 already has a massive movie catalogue. The long-delayed Aquaman sequel finally lands while the MCU kicked off the Multiverse Saga with Phase Five’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy, and soon, The Marvels.

On top of that, Timothée Chalamet plays a young Willy Wonka, The Hunger Games franchise is cooking up a prequel, and Tobin Bell will return as maniacal trap-man Jigsaw in Saw X.

Check out the Fall 2023 movie schedule below for both theatrical and streaming. With Dune Part Two, Kraven the Hunter, and the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel all moving to 2024, there’s a little more wiggle room than usual, though there are still ample amounts of cinema to satisfy.

In Armageddon, the two new Spy Kids (Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterson), children of the world’s greatest secret agents, unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer. Now they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.

No One Will Save You

In sci-fi survival thriller No One Will Save You, Kaitlyn Dever (Justified, Booksmart) plays a young woman whose home is invaded by extra-terrestrial terrors. Written and directed by Brian Duffield (The Babysitter, Love and Monsters).

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

Wes Anderson’s Netflix adaptation of the famed Roald Dahl short story stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a rich man, Henry Sugar, who attempts to learn to see without using his eyes (in order to cheat at gambling). The Creator

John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe and young Madeleine Yuna Voyles star in this sci-fi epic from Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One) about a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Washington plays a hardened ex-special forces agent who discovers the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

Saw X

How can Tobin Bell’s iconic John Kramer — aka Jigsaw — return this time? No, not in flashbacks. This time, John is center stage in a new prequel chapter, taking place between the first and second Saw film as he travels to Mexico in search of a miracle cure for his cancer, only to discover he’s being conned by nefarious crooks. Shawnee Smith also returns as apprentice Amanda, as does Saw franchise veteran editor/director Kevin Greutert.

The Exorcist: Believer

Now that he’s resurrected the Halloween franchise with a new sequel trilogy, director David Gordon Green is tackling The Exorcist next, once again ignoring the previous sequels. His film will serve only as a decades-later follow-up to William Friedkin’s original 1973 film. Ellen Burstyn returns as once-besieged mother Chris MacNeil, joining Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd. In this new tale, a father of a possessed child, desperate for help, goes in search of someone who has had similar experiences – Burstyn’s Chris.

John Cena and Alison Brie star in this action-comedy from Taken director Pierre Morel. When a military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, the three are forced to escape into the jungle together. Alice Eve and Christian Slater also star.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

Prettty self-explanatory, this one. Taylor Swift’s juggernaut Eras Tour is coming to theaters, for fans who want to re-live the experience or for those who didn’t get to make it to one of her recent arena shows. It’s already broken AMC’s first-day presales record, besting Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it’s made The Exorcist: Believer relinquish its Friday the 13th release date and move up a week to October 6. This one’s gonna be big.

The Burial

Based on the true story of lawyer Willie E. Gary and his client Jeremiah Joseph O’Keefe’s lawsuit against the Loewen funeral company, legal drama The Burial stars Oscar-winners Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones. It will be in theaters for one week befor streaming on Hulu. Alan Ruck, Jurnee Smollett, and Mamoudou Athie also star.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorsese directs Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in this crime drama about members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma being murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major FBI investigation directed by a 29-year-old J. Edgar Hoover and former Texas Ranger Tom White (Jesse Plemons). Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and Tantoo Cardinal also star. The film will also be released in IMAX theaters.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

Emily Blunt and Chris Evans team for this David Yates-directed Netflix crime drama about a high school dropout who lands a job with a failing pharmaceutical start-up in a yellowing strip mall in Central Florida, soon finding herself at the center of a criminal conspiracy. Also starring Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, and Chloe Coleman.

Self Reliance

Writer/director Jake Johnson (New Girl, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) makes his feature-helming debut with Self Reliance, about a man who receives an invitation to win $1 million by taking part in a reality television game on the dark web where he can be hunted by killers… only when he’s alone. Naturally, he attempts to be surrounded by friends (and strangers) 24/7. Also starring Anna Kendrick, Christopher Lloyd, Emily Hampshire, Natalie Morales, and Andy Samberg (as himself).

Quiz Lady

Will Ferrell co-produced Awkwafina and Sandra Oh in a comedy about sisters — one of whom, Anne (Awkwafina), is obsessed with game shows — who must come together to help pay off their mother’s gambling debts. Which means, yes, turning Anne into a quiz show champ. Jason Schwartzman, Tony Hale, Holland Taylor, and Ferrell himself co-star.

The Marvels

David Fincher’s sedcond Netflix film (after 2020’s Mank) reunites him with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker. In The Killer, Michael Fassbender plays an assassin who, after a botched outing, clashes with his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal. Also starring Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, and Tilda Swinton.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

Serving as a prequel story to The Hunger Games franchise, this fifth installment (based on Suzanne Collins’ 2020 book) features Tom Blyth as a young Coriolanus Snow (the Donald Sutherland character from the original films). Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis, and Jason Schwartzman also star in this story, which details the Tenth Annual Hunger Games as Coriolanus Snow turns 18 and worries about his future.

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain

Comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy — Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy — whose popularity on YouTube and TikTok led to an SNL gig producing videos featuring themselves doing a bit with the hosts each week, have landed their own Peacock movie — The Treasure of Foggy Mountain. In it, the three play childhood friends who set off to find gold treasure rumored to be buried on a nearby mountain.

Acclaimed theater director George C. Wolfe (Bring in ‘da Noise/Bring in ‘da Funk) helms this biography about the life of the civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground Productions. Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead, If Beale Street Could Talk) stars as Rustin and leads an all-star cast including Chris Rock, CCH Pounder, Jeffrey Wright, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Glynn Turman.

Opening the same day as Ridley Scott’s Napoleon — er, Wish…polean anyone? — Disney’s Wish is a new animated musical featuring Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, and Alan Tudyk. The origin of the Disney “wish” star, Wish centers on a 17-year-old girl named Asha (DeBose) who makes a passionate plea to the stars in a moment of need when she senses a darkness in the Kingdom of Rosas. Directed by Frozen’s Chris Buck and Frozen storyboard artist Fawn Veerasunthorn.

Godzilla Minus One

Russell Crowe also stars alongside Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola, who’ve been cast as the villains of the film. Additionally, Fred Hechinger will play Chameleon, Kraven’s half-brother who is a master of disguise.

Written and directed by Gareth Evans (The Raid, The Raid 2), Havoc stars Tom Hardy, Forest Whitaker, and Timothy Olyphant in the story of a detective who must fight his way through a criminal underworld to rescue a politician’s estranged son while untangling his city’s dark web of conspiracy and corruption.

Cocaine Bear

Loosely based (um…yeah!) on a true incident in the ’80s involving a bear and a duffle bag of narcotics, Cocaine Bear looks to unleash its crazy fury on moviegoers this February. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, and starring Keri Russell (plus Matthew Rhys and Margo Martindale – is this an Americans reunion?), Cocaine Bear follows an American black bear that goes on a murderous rampage in a small Georgia town. O’Shea Jackson Jr., Alden Ehrenreich, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Ray Liotta (in one of his final roles) also star.

Besieged by star Ezra Miller’s serious legal troubles, The Flash was even in danger of being shelved by Warner Bros. As of now, The Flash is still a go, with Miller being joined by Kiersey Clemons and, reportedly, Michael Shannon (as Zod), Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Batman (though Keaton’s return as Batman in Batgirl won’t be seen now) and Sasha Calle as Supergirl.
