20th Century Studios has revealed psychological thriller The First Omen, the prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen, will be released on April 5, 2024.

Along with the spring 2024 release date, the Disney-owned studio also gave us a first look at The First Omen, featuring an image of a young nun all dressed in black surrounded by candles formed in the shape of a demon’s teeth in the middle of a church. The lights floating above the candles between the painting of the Virgin Mary seem to represent the eyes of a sinister monster.

The First Omen is a directorial debut for Arkasha Stevenson. The logline for the film reads, “When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”

The cast for the prequel, which has been in the works since 2016, includes Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Tawfeek Barhom (Mary Magdalene), Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Ralph Ineson (The Northman), and Bill Nighy (Living). Ben Jacoby wrote the story, while Stevenson, Tim Smith and Keith Thomas wrote the screenplay, and David S. Goyer and Keith Levine produced the film.

For the uninitiated, the original film starred Gregory Peck as an American diplomat who believes his 5-year-old son Damien, whom he adopted after his original child was stillborn, is the Antichrist. Aside from this prequel, The Omen has since spawned two sequels and a remake that ironically released June 6, 2006, which starred Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles.
