Disney reportedly spent nearly $275 million on making the upcoming “The Marvels” film which releases in November according to Forbes.
The blockbuster budget was disclosed in company filings released yesterday by the Disney subsidiary which made the movie in the UK and is a bigger figure than the incorrect $130 million figure floated about earlier this week.
The public filings indicate up to September 30th 2022, the company spent $274.8 million on the project and banked a $55 million subsidy from the government of the United Kingdom.
Thus its actual budget up to that point sits at $219.8 million. The film was shot in the back half of 2021 and underwent reshoots early-mid 2022 so that budgetary figure covers pre-production, filming, and a decent chunk of post-production.
The final figure is expected to be higher as the remaining post-production and distribution costs are added (there’s also marketing spend which is separate).
The incorrect $130 million figure that went around yesterday may have been sourced from a Forbes article in April with that figure quoted from UK filings for the previous year (up to September 2021) and covered only the film’s pre-production stage and first few months of filming at that time.
The final figure will likely put it in line with other Marvel films of late such as “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” which each cost a reported $250 million.
