Marvel Studios’ “The Marvels” is coming in at the lower end of yesterday’s estimates with the film’s opening weekend haul now on track for a $47 million debut at the domestic box-office and just $63.3 million internationally for a $110.3 million worldwide start.
That’s the lowest-grossing domestic and international opening weekend of any Marvel movie ever, even as it opened in No. 1 in many territories.
It’s also nearly a 70% drop from “Captain Marvel,” and less than half of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” earlier this year which debuted to $106 million domestically.
That third “Ant-Man” boasted notably worse reviews than “The Marvels” did, though the reviews for “The Marvels” still came in soft. Even DC’s “The Flash” domestic debut was notably higher at $55 million.
With a $220 million budget, there’s no real way to spin the film as anything but a dismal launch.
It was a film not helped by a lack of star promotion due to the strikes, the shift in marketing tone at the last minute, the overall post-pandemic moviegoing era which is being harsh to almost every major franchise, the overexposure of the Marvel brand, and the overall negativity and ‘superhero fatigue’ complaints which ring louder than ever.
Also at the domestic box-office, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” looks to come in second with $9 million and a total of $127.2 million so far, followed by “Taylor Swift: Eras Tour” with $5.9 million and a $172.5 million total so far. “Priscilla” was fourth with $4.8 million, and “Killers of the Flower Moon” is fifth with $4.65 million.
