Plenty of game reviewers didn’t get early codes for “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”, which was released today on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Those that did seemed to get them the same day early access switched on (Tuesday).
As a result, it has taken time for reviews to come through. Now they’re out and the verdict seems to be this is not the disaster that many predicted, but nor is it a good game either.
On Metacritic, the title currently sits at 61/100 from 20 reviews, giving it the same score as 2022’s “Saints Row” reboot. It’s several points above last year’s disastrous “Redfall” (56) and several points behind 2022’s yawned upon “Gotham Knights” (67).
The title marks the first major release from Rocksteady Studios in nine years, a long wait from the developer that was able to pump out three highly acclaimed “Batman: Arkham” games in the space of just six years from 2009-2015 – all of those scoring in the high 80s or 90s and proving best sellers.
Those decidedly single-player narrative-driven experiences are replaced with an always online (even in single-player mode), co-op-driven looter shooter title here that has scored a lot of flack pre-release for its live service elements. Here’s a sampling of review quotes:
“I’ve actually enjoyed the ride so far, and despite the side stuff being poor, the story and characterisation is excellent and the combat is good, if a bit hectic. There are things to enjoy here… engaging mission design is nearly non-existent, the looter-shooter mechanics are tired and dull, and the grotesquely-repetitive postgame leaves little-to-nothing to do of interest. “The game leaves a lot to be desired. At first glace, the combat seems interesting but ultimately falls flat due to the repetitive nature of the missions and combat encounters. The dialogue and cutscenes are excellently produced, however, the same cannot be said about the boss fights and ending of the game… The hefty price tag is definitely unjustified and doesn’t feel fully worth it.” – Keen Gamer
