Oscar winner Charlize Theron says the sequel to Netflix action hit “The Old Guard” will be released shortly.
The first film was released in 2020 and followed a team of immortal mercenaries on a revenge mission. Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor starred in the film which was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood,
That cast returns and is joined by Uma Thurman and Henry Golding in the new outing, which Victoria Mahoney is helming. Filming on the project ran from June to September 2022, so it’s surprising Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the film.
Talking with Variety, Theron explains a regime change at Netflix in terms of executives is what’s behind the delay, and the actors and writers strikes also played a part.
Even so, Theron says there was no concern that the film would be shelved:
“Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it. They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it. It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.”
The first film reportedly reached 72 million households in its first four weeks. Theron has also been tapped to star in Netflix’s new thriller feature “Apex” which is being directed by Baltasar Kormákur. That follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted while she’s out in the wild.
