These Capcom Classics Need a Resi-Style Remake

These Capcom Classics Need a Resi-Style Remake
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Capcom Should Give These a Resi-Style Remake

Capcom’s approach to remakes has been revolutionary. Whereas Bluepoint faithfully recreates games with a modern aesthetic, the iconic developers carefully reconstruct titles to make them the definitive version. From complete reimaginations with Resident Evil 2 to perfect refinements in RE4, they have managed to carve a niche that has inspired companies to revisit classic titles. With that in mind, I take a look at Capcom’s extensive back catalog to see which games need a Resi-style remake.

Ōkami

Released in 2006, Ōkami is a wonderful Zelda-inspired adventure that sees you take on the role of Amaterasu. Featuring the unique Celestial Brush, you can pause the action to unleash a heavy attack or to solve puzzles. While the original and HD Remaster still hold up due to its stunning cell-shaded art direction, a full remake would take the adorable wolf to another level.

Darkstalkers

Remake, reboot, reimagining, I don’t care, I just need more Darkstalkers in my life. For those who have never played it, the fighter has a spooky cast full of monsters from international folklore. Featuring slick 2D combat, the game is still considered one of the best in the genre. With the hype around fighting games at an all-time high, it would be amazing to see Capcom revisit this classic fighter.

Marvel vs Capcom

The series has lost its way recently. Infinite and Fate of Two Worlds leaned on the over-the-top nature of superhero brawls which made the game a bit too chaotic. The previous entries however are incredible as they combine heroic powers with Capcom’s signature combat. With a larger focus on launchers and air combos, the game distances itself from its other fighters. Now that Disney seems to be putting more money into the medium, hopefully, we will see another Marvel vs Capcom game soon.

Final Fight

There’s so much you could do with this IP. Although the logical route would be a Streets of Rage 4-style update, I’d like to see Capcom do something more radical. Making the move from side-scrolling beat ’em up to a full God of War-style action-adventure would be amazing. It’s time to do something with this dormant title.

Bionic Commando

Okay, let me put this out there, I was one of the few that actually enjoyed the 2009 iteration. While there were issues, these could easily be addressed and corrected. Insomniac perfected aerial traversal in Spider-Man 2, if Capcom takes inspiration from that, imagine what a new game in that franchise could be like.

Dino Crisis

Dino Crisis seems like the logical franchise to tackle for a Resi-style remake. Also created by Shinji Mikami, the panic-inducing title switches slow, brain-dead zombies for fast, intelligent dinosaurs. With the original’s dated visuals and tank controls, it’s begging for a complete overhaul. Come on Capcom, let’s make this one happen.

Onimusha

With Ghost of Tsushima, Assassin’s Creed Red and Rise of Ronin, there is a risk that another historical action-adventure set in Japan would be overlooked. However, with Takeshi Miike’s Netflix anime series igniting new interest in the franchise, now is the perfect time to capitalize on the hype. Bring back Jean Reno and add in other stars to make it a cinematic experience like no other.

Lost Planet

The first had potential but its sequels were pretty terrible. So, why revisit this? Well, one of the main issues was altering the game to a co-op experience. The first was designed around taking out huge creatures in extreme conditions. While it did suffer from a generic protagonist and mediocre design, there is potential in the premise.

Rival Schools

I know this is another fighter but Capcom has made so many great ones! So, why does this need a remake? Well, the team-based battler is unique, with a four-button layout akin to SNK games. However, swapping the macho exterior which usually permeates games in the genre for a school setting helps to create a fresh take that fans of the genre fell in love with. Let’s revisit this classic.

Honorable Mention – Viewtiful Joe

While this game doesn’t necessarily need remaking, it should definitely be revisited. An incredible game with a slick combat system and stylish art direction, creating another game in the series should be a no-brainer. While the creator left to construct PlatinumGames, Capcom has several talented devs who could create a worthy sequel.

So that’s my list of games that should get a Resi-style remake. What do you think of the ones I selected? What would you add and remove? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter, and don’t forget to subscribe to us on YouTube for more great video game content.
