This Economist Broke Down The Dystopian Reality Of 3.2 Million Kids Being Without Childcare In 2023

An economist named Kathryn Anne Edwards recently addressed a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs subcommittee in a now-viral video about the devastating impact of nationwide childcare center closings, saying, “In surveys, paid childcare providers say that when Rescue Act funds end, they will either cut staff wages, raise prices, close classrooms, or close altogether. It would be unheard of for any combination of those actions not to push parents, largely mothers, out of the workforce.”

Edwards continued, “The Century Foundation estimates that [childcare] providers will eliminate 3.2 million care slots, with about a quarter of what’s currently provided in the US, when the funding ends. That could mean 3 million mothers leave the labor force. It could be more if the remaining spots increase in price.” According to Yahoo News, up to 70,000 childcare centers could close across the US.
