After 2021’s “Spider-Man: Now Way Home” became the highest-grossing film in the franchise to date, you would think Sony would be rushing to get another one into production.
That hasn’t been the case, but now it looks as if the film is finally picking up steam with a director search underway to replace Jon Watts who has exited.
Current “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland has downplayed his future with the franchise in past interviews. It seems his tune had changed when he appeared at the Sands International Film Festival in Scotland the other day.
While he was there, he told Deadline he hopes to make a fourth film and beyond:
“The simple answer is that I’ll always want to do Spider-Man films. I owe my life and career to Spider-Man. So, the simple answer is yes. I’ll always want to do more.”
Part of the reason for this is likely due to Holland having more involvement in the film’s creative process this time around, and indicating he has a say in the story:
“This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early. It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning. It’s just a really fun stage for me. Like I said, everyone wants it to happen. But we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things.”
He also indicates they aren’t that far along in the development stage, with a story not yet cracked:
“We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect. The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing.”
Previously it was teased Sony aims to begin shooting in the back half of this year and that they’ve been having issues choosing between quite different takes on the material for the next one.
