A tourist has shared the weird response they got from a restaurant in Italy when they asked for garlic oil to be added to their pizza.
The tourist, who goes by the Reddit username mosbert, posted a photo of a bottle of olive oil and a clove of garlic with a toothpick in it, alongside the caption: “I went to Italy and ordered garlic oil to my pizza…”
Other Redditors were quick to point out their mistake.
“As an Italian it’s really funny to see a lot of you think the problem is that we don’t want people to put things on pizza, when the real, simple problem is that in Italy we don’t have garlic flavoured oil. We just don’t use it, it is not commercialised either, so anyone in Italy can’t do any better than giving you garlic and oil,” explained DaButch19.
“And, just so you Americans know, excluding some die-hard Naples restaurants, there are 30+ completely accepted toppings for pizza, with every region adding some speciality to the list. Simply, pineapple is NOT on the list, since in Italy it’s considered only a dessert.”
Bongo1020 said: “Garlic oil isn’t really used as a condiment in Italy, and I cautiously say the rest of Europe either. It’s occasionally used in some recipes, but I don’t think I’ve ever encountered it as a table seasoning.”
“Restaurant was probably confused by your request, I know I’d be,” they added.
While others had a bit of fun with the post.
“When in Rome, order things that aren’t on the menu. That’s how the saying goes right?” chipped in Firestoner.
“Well, at least you didn’t order ranch dressing on your pizza,” said someone else.
“Maybe they thought you were hunting vampires they even gave you a stake!” added another.
Some people shared their own ordering fails while travelling.
“I remember visiting the states with my family (from Canada) years ago. Mum asked if they served ‘Caesars’ (a popular Canadian drink similar to a Bloody Mary, but made with Clamato, a tomato and clam-juice blend). She explained what Clamato was, but ordered their ‘Bloody Mary’ anyways. They served it to her with a 1 ounce shot of canned clam juice/water,” one person shared.
“As a kid I asked for corn on my pizza when we were in Italy. The whole thing was thickly covered with it to the point that you couldn’t see any other topping. In hindsight I am sure the chef did it out of passive aggressiveness, but at the time I was the happiest child and it was one of the best pizzas I ever ate,” added another.
