Five years ago came the news that David Fincher had signed on with Netflix to co-write and direct a pilot script for a TV series prequel to Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown”.
Adding to the interest was that Fincher was set to co-write the series with none other than the original L.A. noir film’s celebrated writer Robert Towne who also penned the less well-received sequel “The Two Jakes”. Then… nothing.
Five years on, in an interview with Variety marking the 50th anniversary of the original film, the 90-year-old Towne revealed that the show’s scripts have been written and are ready to film:
“All I’m likely to say is yes, all the episodes have been written for Netflix. Working with a force of nature like David Fincher, though occasionally humbling, is never less than enlightening.”
The series, should it go forward, would follow the early days of Jack Nicholson’s Jake Gittes character working in a town full of corruption and wealth. The series would also explore the relationship between Gittes and fellow officer Lou Escobar (Perry Lopez).
Fincher’s next project is expected to be “Strangers,” a new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s “Strangers on a Train” novel (previously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock), starring Ben Affleck. A possible U.S. remake of “Squid Game” is also on the way.
The original “Chinatown” recently became available to purchase on 4K UHD disc.
