Filmmaker Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings,” “Bumblebee”) is attached to direct an adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s best-selling 2021 fantasy novel “Piranesi” which has been set up at LAIKA.

The famed Oregon-based stop-motion animation studio, of which Knight is president, has acquired the rights to the work which marks Clarke’s second novel following “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell back in 2005.

The novel is set within a parallel universe made up of hundreds of halls and infinite rooms, along with an ocean imprisoned within. This universe triggers a gradual loss of memory and identity in newcomers.

The story is told through the research notes of the eponymous narrator, who reconstructs the story of his own arrival as he explores this world.

Knight is currently in production on an adaptation of Colin Meloy’s “Wildwood” for the studio – their first film since “Missing Link” in 2019.

He’ll also direct LAIKA’s first adult animated feature “The Night Gardener” which hails from “Ozark” creator Bill Dubuque. Recently, Knight also was attached to direct the live-action “Masters of the Universe” movie at Amazon MGM Studios.
