Two arrested for selling modified firearms to Siam Paragon shooter

Police have arrested two suspects who sold guns to the 14-year-old shooter who killed two people at a Bangkok mall earlier this week.

Provincial police apprehended two suspects, 45-year-old Suwanpong and his son 22-year-old Akkrawit, at a residence in Yala province Wednesday afternoon. It was found that the shooter contacted them to purchase guns and ammunition.

The police searched the residence and found approximately 209 rounds of ammunition, 33 gun barrels, nine magazines, and 27 other firearm accessories. They also found a gray shirt belonging to Suwanpong that correlates with CCTV footage of a man withdrawing money from an ATM machine.

The two are currently charged with selling illegal firearms, and police are still searching for an additional suspect.

Bangkok is still reeling from the tragedy that struck Siam Paragon when a shooter opened fire at the mall on Tuesday.

The shooter, a 14-year-old male, was seen wearing combat attire and wielding a 9mm blank gun modified to fire real bullets. When police apprehended the suspect, he was found to be in a confused state. Police claim the suspect suffered a psychotic episode and did not take prescribed medication. The suspect was reportedly unable to give a coherent statement.

Two victims were killed, both women, a Burmese and a Chinese national. Five others were also injured, four women and one man.

The suspect is currently charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder, illegally possessing a firearm, illegally carrying a firearm, and illegally firing in a public place. He is currently held at the Juvenile Corrections Center and will undergo psychiatric evaluation.

The shooter was a student at a private school named The Essence.

An investigation made by the department’s Mental Health Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team found through questioning staff and students that they were aware of his mental illness but that he did not exhibit any signs of aggression. Students and staff said they weren’t in contact with the suspect as school had closed a week before the incident.
