Though the writer’s and actor’s strikes are continuing unabated right now, several dozen (mostly indie) movies and shows have either been allowed to resume or continue filming thanks to SAG-AFTRA waivers or existing Equity agreements.
Today though, SAG-AFTRA has officially issued its first waiver that permits actors to promote their upcoming film during the strike. That waiver had been handed to the cast of Music Box Films’ independent drama film “The Unknown Country”.
As a result, the film’s two main stars – “Killers of the Flower Moon” actress Lily Gladstone and “Quantum Leap” revival leading man Raymond Lee – are able to do publicity for their project before and after its theatrical release.
Said release takes place this Friday, July 28th in New York and Los Angeles. Music Box Films said in a statement:
“As an independent, non-AMPTP-affiliated distributor, Music Box Films is committed to bringing the best independent and international films to cinemas around the US. And few films are as thoroughly independent as THE UNKNOWN COUNTRY.
We are grateful to the creative team and SAG-AFTRA for swiftly signing an interim agreement that will allow the release to go forward with all collaborators present. Music Box Films will continue working with independent productions to bring unique and diverse stories to your local arthouse and independent theaters.”
The story begins with an unexpected invitation launching a grieving young woman (Gladstone) on a solitary road trip through the American Midwest as she struggles to reconcile the losses of her past with the dreams of her future.
The film has been written and directed by Morrisa Maltz and also stars Richard Ray Whitman, Lainey Bearkiller Shangreaux, and Devin Shangreaux. The announcement opens the door for films and series coming out this Fall to apply for a waiver for similar purposes.
