“Kingsman” and “X-Men: First Class” director Matthew Vaughn has been out there the past week or so promoting the recent trailer release of his spy thriller/comedy “Argylle”.
Across several interviews he’s discussed a number of high-profile projects he has been linked to, a few he abandoned, and ideas for where some franchises should go. Here’s a breakdown of what he’s said to outlets including Collider and Happy Sad Confused:
James Bond
First up, one franchise he definitely won’t be a part of in the near future is James Bond, saying he has “more chance at being cast as Bond then directing Bond” at this point. He adds that the producers are “not keen on me” and anything he would’ve done with Bond he’s done in his “Kingsman” films.
Stardust 2
He says he’s still thinking about a concept he came up with for the development of a potential sequel in which the necklace lands in 1960s London: “So you have these crazy characters running around 1960s London but fitting in because it was a crazy time”.
Star Wars
Asked it it’d be tough to turn down an offer to direct a “Star Wars” film, he responded: “Now, not so much.” He added that the attraction for him would be to play with the characters he grew up with:
“If they said to me they’d reboot ‘Star Wars’ and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo and Vader and do your version of it. Everyone would say you’re an idiot to try, but that would excite me.
Why are the characters so hallowed that from 1977 you can’t re-do it for a new audience? ‘Star Wars’ is the Skywalker family and that’s where I think they’ve gone wrong. They’ve forgot.
They’ve done brilliantly in TV but it needs an epic new film. That’s what I would do [i.e. reboot Luke]. Everyone is going to go batshit crazy but let’s bring it on. If you want a new generation, make the movie for them. The old generation, hopefully you make it well enough that they enjoy it.”
The King’s Man: The Traitor King
The follow-up to the prequel film will shift the action further forward in time and will focus on the rise of Hitler and how he was supported by the English aristocracy. He says they have “written it and it’s pretty cool”. He indicates both “Kingsman 3” and the “Kick-Ass” reboot are coming before this, as is an unnamed musical he’ll direct next year. He also says “Kingsman 3” is 90% written.
Argylle
Though being sold as a spy film, he dubs the movie his take on “Romancing the Stone” the way “Kingsman” was his take on Bond. It’s a piece of “pure escapism” and a “great date movie”.
He also revealed that the final cut of the film is longer than the original cut, this was done to allow scenes to “breathe” and improve the viewing experience.
“Argylle” will open in cinemas in February.
