One of the most acclaimed series of the past few years, HBO’s “Watchmen,” briefly vanished from the Max service today in what was reportedly a glitch. The title is now back on the service.
TVMoJoe spoke with two HBO sources who say: “WATCHMEN has not been purposely removed from the Max or HBO libraries; it hasn’t been Zas’ed. There was some sort of tech glitch.”
“Watchmen” disappeared for over an hour this afternoon within the app and, according to JustWatch.com, the title is not available in the U.S. on any other streaming or VOD service despite the series running just four years ago.
It remained available throught today’s incident internationally on services in other countries that have deals with HBO or Max, such as Australian streamer Binge.
The series launched to an average of 7.1 million viewers across HBO’s linear channels and streaming platforms, becoming the network’s most-watched new program since “Big Little Lies” at the time. The series also won eleven Emmys, including outstanding limited series, and was a critical smash.
A sequel series to the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel, the story takes place in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws.
The show starred the likes of Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Jean Smart, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent and Sara Vickers.
Today’s glitch happened very close to a major Netflix outage which saw that streaming service down for many customers for around three hours.
