WGA & AMPTP Fourth Day Talks Likely

A third day of direct talks between the Writer’s Guild (WGA) negotiating committee and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) went on for nearly ten hours today, wrapping at just before 9pm tonight, according to the trades.

Today’s talks ended without a tentative agreement for a new three-year contract, and sources for Deadline reportedly claim both sides were able to reach an accord on several issues, though solutions for others aren’t there yet. Variety sources claim Friday’s meeting ended on a positive note, and that talk is now in the “slog phase of working out legal language that both sides can agree on”.

Showing just how serious this is, the heads of Disney, NBCUniversal, Netflix and Warner Bros Discovery were all in the room yet again today for a third day in a row and are reportedly open to reconvening as early as tomorrow with the hope of getting things done before the Yom Kippur holiday begins at sundown on Sunday.

The stalemate between both sides has been frustrating, but anticipation has risen in the past 48-72 hours as it’s believed an end is in sight. Details of how the strike would wind down, and writers would go back to work, were reportedly discussed in the negotiations.

The WGA strike is currently on its 144th day, just ten days shy of the longest walkout by writers to date – that being the 154-day strike in 1988. The current SAG-AFTRA strike has only been going for around half as long as it reached Day 71 today.

Update: The Writer’s Guild have confirmed in an official statement that talks are set to reconvene tomorrow (Saturday).
